Medical Tourism

What is Medical Tourism?
Medical Tourism is the designated name for a concept, a fast growing world-wide phenomena that is changing conventional health care in the 21st century. It is the process wherein an individual travels abroad for medical, dental, or cosmetic treatment.

Why travel abroad?
Many people travel abroad for treatment because they are un-insured or under-insured and are unable to afford the high cost of medical treatment at home.  Those that are insured and need medical treatment find themselves on unbearable waiting lists.
In the United States alone, there are an estimated 46 million individuals with no health coverage, and unaccounted millions more who are underinsured. In addition, the rise in healthcare premiums is preventing employers from providing affordable medical coverage to their employees. As a result, people are increasingly looking for alternative options.

Significant Savings
There is an immense difference in cost for treatments performed abroad, as compared to the same treatments at home.  Most treatments abroad cost only a fraction of what it would cost in the U.S.

Quality of Facilities
There was a time when advanced medical facilities and procedures were available only in the United States.  The situation today is that many of the most advanced facilities are abroad in countries that cater to international patients. Much of the technology and equipment that are found in hospitals abroad are either comparable or even exceed the standards set by healthcare centers in the United States.

Qualifications of the Medical Staff
Medical professionals affiliated with these accredited hospitals have outstanding reputations and are well regarded in their respective specializations. A heavy number of these specialists, after having practiced here in the United States for many years, have now gone back to their native countries and are running healthcare centers, which cater to both local and foreign patients, and set standards which even their colleagues in the United States would find hard to match.

Travel to the United States
Since getting medical treatment in a specific hospital or country is based on an individual’s personal preferences and comfort levels, the concept of medical tourism works both ways. Individuals travel abroad for more readily available treatments and savings, while others travel to the U.S. for private elite care from prominent medical professionals.   This exchange of patients is a form of free enterprise at its best.
